Urgent Call for Unity: Assam’s Sivasagar MLA Akhil Gogoi Threatens Resignation Over Escalating Hindu-Muslim Tensions
Sivasagar MLA Akhil Gogoi Willing to Resign Over Continuous Hindu-Muslim Issues
Akhil Gogoi, the MLA of Sivasagar, has publicly stated his willingness to resign from his position if necessary. This declaration comes as a strong stand against the ongoing Hindu-Muslim issues. Utilizing his X (formerly Twitter) handle, Gogoi expressed his discontent, writing, "If needed I shall resign as the MLA but I shall not tolerate Hindu-Muslim, Hindu-Muslim everytime."
Gogoi’s statement emphasized his frustration with the persistent communal narrative and indicated his readiness to step down rather than continue under such conditions.
This outspoken stance follows Gogoi’s earlier comments in July, where he reacted to statements made by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma regarding the state’s Muslim population. Speaking to the media, Gogoi challenged the accuracy of the Chief Minister’s claims. According to Sarma, the Muslim population in Assam in 1951 was 12 percent, a figure Gogoi disputed, asserting it was actually 24 percent.
Gogoi further questioned Sarma’s claim that the current Muslim population stands at 40 percent, pointing to the 2011 census which recorded it at 34 percent. He implied that Sarma’s statements were intended to create confusion rather than addressing real issues.
Shortly after, Sushmita Dev, MP from the All India Trinamool Congress (TMC), also refuted Sarma’s claims. She stated that, based on historical data, the Muslim population in 1951 was 25 percent, not the 12 percent mentioned by Sarma.
Gogoi’s and Dev’s responses highlight a growing concern about the manipulation of demographic data to stoke communal tensions. Gogoi’s readiness to resign underscores the seriousness with which he views the issue, insisting on a political environment free from continuous communal conflicts.
