French President Emmanuel Macron has emphasized that the arrest of Telegram founder and CEO Pavel Durov in Paris was based on an ongoing judicial investigation, denying any political motivations behind the move. In a social media statement, Macron clarified that the apprehension of Durov, a 39-year-old Russian who also holds French, UAE, and Saint Kitts and Nevis citizenships, was part of a legal process. He reiterated France’s commitment to freedom of expression, innovation, and entrepreneurship.
Durov was detained by French authorities on August 24 after landing in Paris from Azerbaijan on his private jet. Reports indicate that the charges against him involve the alleged facilitation of criminal activities through the Telegram platform.
In response, Telegram has dismissed accusations, stating that it is illogical to hold the platform or its owner accountable for misuse by users. The company highlighted its compliance with European Union legislation, including the Digital Services Act.
