Naga Villager’s Dream Realized: Opening Act for Mayer in Guwahati
Singer-songwriter Abdon Mech, a 21-year-old from Thahekhu village in Nagaland, will open for John Mayer’s debut concert in India, scheduled today in Mumbai. Mech said he learned of the opportunity just 48 hours earlier and described feeling “overwhelmed by disbelief, excitement, and gratitude.”
Sharing the news on social media, Mech wrote, “I am opening for John Mayer. This kid is opening for his absolute hero… If anybody tells you that your dreams are too big, please punch them in the face. Please chase your dreams, I am chasing mine.” The post followed a campaign he began after posting a video in October last year when he first heard about Mayer’s India dates.
Mech has credited Mayer as a major influence on his sound and approach, and he turned that admiration into action by launching the hashtag #AbdonforJohn and asking online supporters to back his bid to open the show. The grassroots effort grew into a wider campaign that ultimately brought him to Mumbai as the opening act.
Though Mech comes from a family of professional musicians, he did not originally plan on a music career. He began pursuing music seriously after completing Class 12, using performance opportunities at his home church to develop his skills as an artist.
John Mayer, a multiple Grammy-winning musician known for blending blues, rock, folk and pop, won Best Pop Vocal Album and Best Male Pop Vocal Performance for “Waiting on the World to Change” at the 49th Grammy Awards; his 2009 album “Battle Studies” marked a return to a pop-focused sound. Mech’s chance to open for Mayer marks a high-profile milestone for the young Naga artist and a rare spotlight for talent from his remote region.
