Exclusive: Tobacco Baron’s Son to Undergo Medical Exam in Shillong
KANPUR, Feb 9 — A speeding Lamborghini allegedly driven by the son of a prominent tobacco trader ploughed into pedestrians on VIP Road in the city’s upscale Gwaltoli area on Sunday afternoon, injuring six people, police said. The incident occurred around 3:15 pm; no arrests have been made and an FIR has been registered naming an “unidentified driver,” officials added. The vehicle, a Lamborghini Revuelto bearing Delhi registration DL 11 CF 4018, has been seized and sent for mechanical inspection.
Police said Shivam Mishra, son of Banshidhar Exports Pvt. Ltd. owner K. K. Mishra, is part of the investigation. Witnesses and locals surrounded the car at the scene and accused private security personnel accompanying the occupants of attempting to push back the crowd. Officers later removed the driver from the vehicle, shifted him and the injured to a private hospital, and placed Mishra under close surveillance to prevent any attempt to evade investigation.
Eyewitnesses recalled a chaotic sequence: the Lamborghini first struck an autorickshaw, then hit a stationary motorcycle, flinging its rider nearly 10 feet. The car reportedly mounted the motorcycle’s front wheel, dragged it for some distance, struck an electric pole and came to a halt. Police officials are examining CCTV footage from nearby shops, traffic intersections and residences to reconstruct events and estimate the vehicle’s speed.
At the police station, victims and residents alleged that associates of the accused misbehaved and accused the force of going soft because of the family’s influence. One of the injured, identified as Taufiq in the FIR complaint, was thrown several metres and suffered serious leg injuries; others sustained fractures and bruises. Officials later said all injured had been discharged from hospital.
Commissioner of Police Raghubir Lal said the SHO of the area, Santosh Gaur, had been removed from his post and sent to police lines for failing to follow due procedure after the accident. “He failed to follow due procedure after the accident… The lapse amounts to negligence. Immediate action has been taken,” Lal told reporters. He added that further action would depend on medical findings and vowed a thorough probe.
Speculation that the driver may have been inebriated circulated after the crash; the family has said Shivam Mishra suffers from epilepsy. Lal said authorities will conduct medical tests to determine fitness to drive and, if those tests indicate the driver was medically unfit, will examine how a driving licence was obtained. He also said the role of Regional Transport Office officials would be scrutinised if any norms were violated. “We will leave no stone unturned to ensure legal action against the accused,” Lal said.
The FIR, registered on a complaint by Taufiq, names offences including rash and negligent driving and causing hurt. Police continue to review CCTV, await medical reports and carry out mechanical checks on the seized vehicle as part of the investigation.
K. K. Mishra’s company supplies tobacco to gutkha manufacturers in the region. Officials said the Mishra family had come under Income Tax Department scrutiny in March 2024 when searches at multiple premises in Delhi and Kanpur yielded luxury vehicles, jewellery, watches and about Rs 4.5 crore in cash. Among seized vehicles at that time were a Rolls-Royce Phantom, a McLaren, a Porsche and the black Lamborghini Revuelto involved in Sunday’s accident; officials noted several bore the registration number “4018.” The crash has reignited concerns over high-powered cars speeding through congested urban streets.
