Security Deployed After Ukhrul Arson: Urgent Investigations Underway
The Manipur government on Monday launched wide-ranging damage-control measures after arson and communal clashes in Ukhrul district burned 24 houses in Litan village and damaged government property. Officials said 21 of the destroyed homes belonged to members of the Tangkhul Naga community and three to the Kuki community, and that Public Works Department offices were among state properties set ablaze. Additional security forces were deployed, police inquiries opened and technological tools are being used to identify those responsible.
Deputy Chief Minister Losii Dikho visited the affected area, carried out an on-ground assessment and convened a peace meeting with community representatives. He said the meeting was productive and that both sides expressed a desire for peace. Dikho also assured residents that, although no arrests have been made so far, the perpetrators would be identified and apprehended.
State officials stressed that both state and central agencies were coordinating response efforts and that the strengthened security presence aims to prevent further violence and restore normalcy quickly. Police sources said investigations are ongoing and that evidence gathered from the scene and electronic leads are being examined to establish responsibility.
Cabinet Minister Konthoujam Govindas, speaking from the BJP Imphal office, said the government was closely monitoring developments and appealed to residents to exercise restraint. He reminded citizens of Manipur’s long history of diverse ethnic communities living together and said lasting peace and communal harmony are essential for the state’s development and can only be secured by ending the conflict.
Local leaders and officials urged calm while authorities continue verification of damage and relief arrangements for those displaced. The administration has indicated that further updates will follow as investigations progress and security measures are reviewed to prevent recurrence.
