Assam Congress Demands Urgent Probe into Attack on Women Leaders at Rally
Leader of the Opposition in the Assam Assembly, Debabrata Saikia, alleged on Sunday that women Congress leaders were assaulted by members of the BJP at a recent rally. Saikia called on the Assam State Women’s Commission to investigate the incidents and hold those responsible accountable.
In a letter addressed to the chairperson of the women’s commission, Saikia detailed that the assaults occurred during the Congress party’s ongoing “Parivartan Yatra.” According to him, the Congress convoy was obstructed and attacked at Bihguri while traveling from Tezpur to Dhekiajuli. Saikia stated that the assailants heckled the women leaders and made vulgar and derogatory remarks, which he claimed violated their dignity. He recounted that when one leader attempted to protect the convoy, she was physically assaulted and suffered injuries.
Among the injured were senior state party spokesperson Rupa Kalita Das, Assam Pradesh Mahila Congress general secretary Trishna Bora Kakati, and Sonitpur district Mahila Congress president Sampurna Saikia. Saikia was present in a bus when the assaults took place, along with other senior Congress leaders, including state party president Gaurav Gogoi, AICC general secretary Jitendra Singh, and several MPs.
The Congress leader submitted “evidence” to support his allegations, asserting that the material indicates a breach of the dignity and rights of women, warranting an investigation under Section 10(3) of the Assam State Commission for Women Act, 1994. He also criticized the inaction of police officers present during the incident, urging the women’s commission to examine their conduct and take appropriate measures.
