Heightened Security and Traffic Measures Before PM Modi’s Visit to Moran
The Assam administration is ramping up preparations for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Moran on February 14, where he will inaugurate the Indian Air Force’s emergency landing facility (ELF) on a four-lane highway. This facility, built over a 4.2-kilometer stretch of the Moran bypass, is the first of its kind in the region, allowing fighter aircraft to land and take off during emergencies directly from a national highway.
To ensure a smooth visit, a high-level coordination meeting was held on Thursday at the ELF site in Moran. Senior officials from the Assam government, the Indian Air Force, and district administration participated in the meeting to review security arrangements, traffic management, logistics, and the Prime Minister’s schedule. Among the attendees were Assam Chief Secretary Dr. Ravi Kota, Director General of Police Harmeet Singh, and senior representatives from various state departments.
Chief Secretary Dr. Kota confirmed that extensive preparations are underway, including trial landings of fighter aircraft prior to the inauguration. “Starting February 8, fighter aircraft will begin trial landings on the emergency strip. The Prime Minister will arrive on February 14 to formally inaugurate the facility and will also observe fighter aircraft operations before departing for Delhi,” he stated.
As part of the preparations, traffic on the 4.2-kilometer stretch of the Moran bypass has been restricted. Commuters are advised to use the old National Highway-37 during this period. Dr. Kota noted, “Traffic regulations are being implemented from today, with the old road remaining open to minimize public inconvenience.”
The event will be accessible to the public, with designated viewing areas set up for spectators to witness fighter jet landings up close. Dr. Kota highlighted the Chief Minister’s emphasis on allowing people, especially students and youth, to experience this historic moment. “Watching fighter aircraft land on a highway will serve as an inspiration and motivation for them,” he added.
Assam DGP Harmeet Singh described the facility as a point of pride for the state, mentioning that elaborate security arrangements are being established for the Prime Minister’s visit. “Creating an emergency landing facility there is an honor for Assam and showcases the quality of our highway infrastructure. The landings and demonstrations will be open to the public at designated areas. Security drills are already being conducted, and we request that people follow instructions and stay within marked zones,” Singh said.
Senior police and security officials reported ongoing coordination with the Indian Air Force to ensure the event proceeds without any security lapses. After its inauguration, the Moran ELF will significantly enhance the operational flexibility of Indian Air Force fighter jets, allowing them to land on the highway during emergencies in the Northeast.
