Dominant NorthEast United FC Storm Into Final with Thrilling 3-0 Victory Over Shillong Lajong
NEUFC Triumphs Over Shillong Lajong to Secure Historic Durand Cup Final Spot
Guwahati: NorthEast United Football Club (NEUFC) decisively defeated local favorites Shillong Lajong Football Club (SLFC) 3-0 in the 133rd Durand Cup semi-final at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, Shillong, on Monday, August 26th. The victory propels NEUFC to their first-ever Durand Cup final, marking a significant milestone for the team.
The Highlanders stunned the predominantly pro-SLFC crowd of over 15,000 early on, thanks to two first-half goals. Thoi Singh capitalized on a well-coordinated play to score in the 13th minute, followed by Moroccan striker Alaaeddine Ajaraie’s strike in the 33rd minute, facilitated by a superb pass from Spanish playmaker Nestor Roger.
Despite SLFC’s spirited efforts to mount a comeback, NEUFC’s midfield, bolstered by Mohammed Ali Bemammer, maintained control over the game. Parthib Gogoi, introduced late by NEUFC coach Juan Pedro Ben Ali, sealed the victory with a solo effort three minutes into added time.
The match’s early momentum was set by a clinical finish from Thoi after a well-executed throw-in and cross from winger Jithinon. SLFC’s attempts to challenge NEUFC’s lead included a long-range shot from Wahlang, compelling NEUFC’s goalkeeper, Gurmeet, into a rapid save.
The Highlanders’ need for a second goal came to fruition when Nestor’s precise aerial pass found Ajaraie. After initially hitting the post, Ajaraie capitalized on his second attempt to firmly secure the lead. Although the goal was temporarily ruled offside, it was ultimately validated by the officials.
In the second half, while the game tempo diminished, Ben Ali introduced fresh legs in Jose Hevia, maintaining the strategy from their successful quarter-final against Emami East Bengal. Despite continued pressure from SLFC, NEUFC’s defense held strong and their attack remained potent. Gogoi’s late goal, assisted by substitute Hamza, rounded off a convincing win for the Highlanders.
This historic victory sets up NEUFC for a highly anticipated Durand Cup final, as they continue to make strides in Indian football.
