Mixed Reactions in West Bengal: Mamata Banerjee’s Compelling SC Argument on SIR
Kolkata, February 4 (IANS) — West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s decision to personally argue her petition against the Election Commission of India (ECI) in the Supreme Court regarding the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) in the state has sparked mixed reactions in political circles. Kunal Ghosh, the general secretary and spokesman for the Trinamool Congress in West Bengal, praised Banerjee’s decision, asserting it was unquestionably correct as evidenced by the court’s acceptance of her arguments. Ghosh described the moment as historic, emphasizing her respectful explanation of new points before the Chief Justice of India (CJI), which he believes made a significant impact.
Conversely, opponents labeled her arguments as a distraction from more pivotal issues, suggesting this behavior reveals a recurring political inconsistency. Sukanta Majumdar, a Union Minister of State and former chief of the BJP in West Bengal, noted that the court had to interrupt Banerjee during her remarks to allow her counsel to take over. He found it particularly shocking that she referred to the ECI as a “WhatsApp Commission,” arguing that her presentation resembled a political speech rather than a legal argument.
The leader of the opposition in the West Bengal Assembly, Suvendu Adhikari, criticized Banerjee’s approach, claiming it was embarrassing for the state’s citizens. He contended that her primary goal was to disrupt the SIR process and that her actions reflected desperation. Similarly, Congress spokesman Soumya Aich Roy echoed this sentiment, suggesting Banerjee’s courtroom performance exemplified her political inconsistency. He reminded that while Rahul Gandhi led protests nationally against the ECI regarding the SIR, Banerjee chose silence, and now she seeks attention through her personal arguments in court.
CPI(M) central committee member Sujan Chakraborty argued that had Banerjee been genuinely concerned about public distress caused by the SIR, she would have acted sooner. Instead, he claimed her current court presence is merely an attempt to garner public attention.
