Urgent Search Underway: Three Students Missing After Assam Boat Capsizes
Three students went missing on February 3 after a country boat they were traveling in capsized in the Gangadhar River in Assam’s Dhubri district, prompting a major search and rescue operation. The incident took place at Belpara Char in the Tamarhat area, where a group of 22 students had journeyed to a riverine island to perform shradh, a traditional funeral ritual. Eyewitnesses reported that the boat lost stability during the return trip and overturned in the swift waters.
While most passengers managed to swim to safety, the strong current swept away three students identified as Saha Alom, Mofida, and Sharmin, all residents of Shagunsara village near the Tamarhat police station. Following the incident, personnel from the nearby Sotoguma police station promptly arrived to initiate rescue efforts. The State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) has since been deployed to conduct an extensive search along the Gangadhar River.
Rescue operations have faced challenges due to the river’s depth, powerful currents, and low visibility after nightfall, according to officials. A local official emphasized, “Locating the missing students remains our top priority. All available resources have been mobilized for the search.”
Meanwhile, family members and villagers have gathered anxiously along the riverbank, holding onto hope as rescue teams continue their work. This tragic incident has once again highlighted the perils associated with river transport in Dhubri’s char areas, where country boats are often used as the primary mode of travel, despite the risks posed by challenging river conditions.
