Shah Promises Tough Action: Illegal Immigrants Face Expulsion in Assam

Union Home Minister Amit Shah announced on Friday that Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma will lead the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the upcoming Assam assembly elections. In a clear message, he stated that if the party secures a third consecutive term, every illegal immigrant in the state will be identified and deported. Speaking at a rally in Dibrugarh’s Khanikar playground, following the inauguration of the second assembly complex, Shah launched a fierce critique of the Congress party, accusing it of “weaponizing illegal migration” for electoral gains. He emphasized that Congress had encouraged illegal immigration for the sake of vote-bank politics.

The new assembly complex, a Rs 284 crore project, is expected to be completed within 30 months. This project fulfills Sarma’s vision to enhance Dibrugarh’s status by 2025. Shah made a bold promise to the crowd, stating, “Today, from the second capital of Assam, I promise that if BJP comes to office for the third time under Sarma, every illegal immigrant will be singled out and thrown out.”

Shah credited the Assam government for decisively addressing encroachments, reporting that 1.26 lakh hectares of land previously occupied by illegal immigrants have been cleared. He praised Sarma for implementing strong measures to counter illegal immigration, which he claimed had altered Assam’s demographics. He noted the encroachments impacting even the birthplace of Srimanta Sankardeva, a revered Assamese saint-scholar, and mentioned the illegal activities in Kaziranga National Park where rhinoceros were killed. “We have limited resources, and the rights of the poor are being snatched. Only the BJP can stop illegal immigrants,” Shah asserted.

Additionally, Shah referenced a recent trade deal with the European Union, stating that Assam tea will be exported to 27 European countries at zero tariffs, marking a significant development for the state’s renowned export.

In a further critique, Shah called out Congress leader Rahul Gandhi for declining to wear a traditional ‘gamosa’ presented by President Droupadi Murmu during a Republic Day event, suggesting that this act disrespected the culture of the North-East.
