Congress Questions CM’s Absence: Urgency Surrounds R-Day Celebrations
Chief Minister Conrad Sangma’s absence during the Republic Day 2026 celebrations in Meghalaya has raised significant concerns from the Opposition Congress. The party criticized his lack of attendance at such a prominent state event, questioning his commitment to fulfilling his duties as the head of the government.
Congress working president Deborah Marak expressed her disappointment on Tuesday, stating that it is the chief minister’s responsibility to take the salute during official ceremonies. She emphasized that Sangma was notably missing from both the Khasi Hills and Garo Hills events, suggesting that his absence might indicate a disregard for the importance of Republic Day and the citizens he represents. Marak demanded clarification on his whereabouts, saying, “We heard the Chief Minister was roaming, and as a CM, it was his responsibility to take the salute.”
In establishment of protocols, Meghalaya Governor CH Vijayashankar took the salute in the state capital, while Thomas Sangma, the Speaker of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly, oversaw the ceremony in Tura. To add to the speculation surrounding his absence, Sangma did not address the celebrations on his social media platforms, leaving many to question the reasons behind his non-participation.
