
Northeast India Celebrates Eight Padma Awardees in 2026: A Proud Moment!
Eight individuals from India’s Northeast have been awarded the Padma Shri as part of the Padma Awards 2026, announced on the eve of Republic Day. This recognition highlights their contributions as “unsung heroes” across various fields. The awardees come from Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Meghalaya, Nagaland, and Tripura, showcasing the region’s rich cultural, social, and artistic diversity. The Padma Shri honors distinguished service in numerous disciplines, including art, culture, social work, agriculture, and education.
From Assam, recipients include Pokila Lekthepi, celebrated for her work in Karbi folk and contemporary music, theatre figure Nuruddin Ahmed, and Jogesh Deuri for his contributions to agriculture and the silk industry. Yumnam Jatra Singh, from Manipur, received recognition for his lifelong commitment to Manipuri dance traditions, while Arunachal Pradesh’s Techi Gubin was honored for his efforts in preserving indigenous culture and promoting national integration.
Hally War from Meghalaya was awarded for her promotion of eco-friendly practices and indigenous knowledge systems. In Tripura, Naresh Chandra Debbarma was recognized for his contributions to Kokborok literature and education, whereas Sangyusang Pongener from Nagaland received the award for his work in preserving Naga folk traditions.
The Padma Awards stand among India’s highest civilian honors and are presented annually in three categories: Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan, and Padma Shri. The formal presentation will take place later this year at a ceremonial function hosted by the President of India at Rashtrapati Bhavan.
