Brace for Impact: RMC Warns of Isolated Heavy Rain in Nine T.N. Districts This Sunday!
Various coastal regions of Tamil Nadu, including Chennai, experienced monsoon-like conditions on Saturday, featuring moderate rainfall with sporadic heavier downpours. The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) has announced that these wet conditions are expected to persist until Monday.
On Sunday, nine districts-Chengalpattu, Tiruvannamalai, Namakkal, Kallakurichi, Villupuram, Thanjavur, Ramanathapuram, Cuddalore, and Salem-are likely to witness significant rainfall. As of Saturday morning, rainfall measurements from the previous 24 hours showed light to moderate precipitation across several areas around Chennai. Locations such as Medavakkam, Pallikaranai, Mamallapuram, Perungudi, Manali New Town, Velachery, and Nungambakkam all reported about 1 cm of rain.
While the rains have brought some relief from heat, temperatures in Chennai, Tiruchi, and Salem remained above normal for this time of year. Coimbatore Airport recorded the lowest minimum temperature in the plains of Tamil Nadu at 18.9 degrees Celsius, while Udhagamandalam experienced the coldest reading among the hill stations at a chilly 6.4 degrees Celsius. The RMC has indicated that minimum temperatures in some areas of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry will likely remain 2-3 degrees Celsius above average through Monday.
Meteorological officials highlighted that a trough in the easterlies over the southwest Bay of Bengal, near the Tamil Nadu-Sri Lanka coast, is contributing to the scattered rainfall. Updates on the heavy rainfall forecasts have been adjusted based on the movement of this weather system, and a return to dry conditions is expected by Tuesday.
Since January 1, Tamil Nadu has recorded a total of 26 mm of rainfall, significantly exceeding the average of 10.8 mm. Districts including Ariyalur, Chennai, Coimbatore, Dindigul, Erode, Salem, and Sivaganga have all seen surplus rainfall this month. The RMC also forecasts that Chennai will likely experience moderate rains along with thunderstorms in some areas on Sunday.
As Tamil Nadu navigates this wet weather, residents are advised to remain cautious. The RMC is continually monitoring the situation, updating forecasts as necessary to ensure public safety amidst the ongoing rain activities.
With these conditions unfolding, it’s crucial for the public to stay informed and prepared as the monsoon weather impacts the state.
