In a landmark achievement, Bangladesh secured their first-ever Test win against Pakistan, prevailing by 10 wickets in the opening match of the two-game series at Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium on Sunday, August 25. The Najmul Hossain Shanto-led team chased a modest target of 30 runs in just 6.3 overs without losing any wickets.
Bangladesh’s triumph was bolstered by their first-innings lead of 117 runs, and their disciplined bowling attack dismissed Pakistan for 146 in the second innings on the fifth day. Mehidy Hasan Miraz shone with the ball, claiming four wickets for 21 runs in his 11.5 overs, while Shakib Al Hasan took three wickets, conceding 44 runs in his 17 overs.
The historic win not only gave Bangladesh a 1-0 lead in the series but also elevated them to a joint-fifth position in the World Test Championship (WTC) 2023-25 points table. Conversely, Pakistan’s loss has seen them drop to the second-last position, having lost all four Test matches under Shan Masood’s leadership.
Key performances from senior players underpinned Bangladesh’s victory. Former captain Mushfiqur Rahim top-scored with 191 runs in the first innings. Mehidy Hasan Miraz contributed significantly with both bat and ball, scoring 77 runs in the first innings and taking a total of five wickets. Other notable contributions came from Shadman Islam (93), Mominul Haque (50), and Litton Das (56).
For Pakistan, wicketkeeper-batter Mohammad Rizwan stood out, remaining unbeaten on 171 runs in the first innings and scoring 51 runs in the second, but his efforts were insufficient to prevent defeat.
The second Test match between these two sides is set to commence on Friday, August 30, at the same venue, promising another exciting encounter.
