French Minister of Agriculture Annie Genevard issued a warning on Sunday regarding the repercussions the United States could face following President Donald Trump’s recent tariffs imposed on eight European nations. The tariffs, announced on Saturday, are linked to Trump’s ongoing frustrations over Denmark’s refusal to sell Greenland, an autonomous territory he claims is vital for U.S. national security.
In her remarks, Genevard emphasized that while the European Union possesses significant commercial leverage, caution is necessary in responding to the U.S. actions. She noted that escalating tensions between the two regions could have detrimental effects, not only for European nations but also for American farmers and industries. “In this escalation of tariffs, he (Trump) has a lot to lose as well, as do his own farmers and industrialists,” she stated, asserting that European nations would not allow the U.S. to act unilaterally.
The tariffs, set at 10% for Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, and Finland, will be enforced beginning February 1. Trump has indicated that these tariffs could escalate to 25% by June 1, 2026. In light of the tariff announcements, European Union ambassadors convened in Brussels on Sunday to discuss the implications of this move. Genevard characterized the situation as complex, stating, “But it could also be deadly for the United States,” and reiterated the unacceptability of any U.S. attempts to acquire Greenland.

In his post on Truth Social, Trump mentioned that the U.S. remains open to negotiations with Denmark and the involved nations, despite the risks they pose. “The United States of America is immediately open to negotiation with Denmark and/or any of these Countries that have put so much at risk, despite all that we have done for them, including maximum protection, over so many decades,” he wrote.
