Bangladesh Responds Fiercely to ICC’s T20 World Cup 2026 Controversy
Bangladesh Cricket Board’s finance committee chairman Nazmul Islam has asserted that the board will not incur any financial losses if Bangladesh decides to withdraw from the ICC T20 World Cup 2026. He emphasized that the primary impact would be felt by the players who would miss out on match-day earnings. Nazmul’s remarks come amid controversy after he referred to former Bangladesh captain Tamim Iqbal as an “Indian agent,” a comment that has sparked considerable debate in connection with the World Cup.
“There will be no loss for the Bangladesh Cricket Board if we don’t participate in the World Cup; the loss will affect the players,” Nazmul stated. He explained that the board’s revenue is secure until 2027, as agreements made during the 2022 ICC financial meeting confirm that their income will remain unaffected by this tournament. He acknowledged that future World Cups and bilateral international events may have implications, particularly concerning whether teams will visit Bangladesh under the Future Tours Programme (FTP).
Nazmul emphasized that the financial arrangements for the BCB have already been finalized for the current cycle, indicating that this specific tournament will not have an effect on the board’s finances. According to him, the only monetary loss would arise from the earnings players gain by participating in matches. He clarified, “Players will lose because they receive a match fee for every match. If a player performs well, such as becoming the man of the match, they receive what is owed to them under ICC rules. This money is directly tied to the player, and the board does not benefit or suffer financially from the player’s participation in this World Cup.”
Nazmul also pointed to potential long-term implications for future tournaments and bilateral series but reiterated that these considerations are separate from the potential fallout of skipping the T20 World Cup 2026. His key message to the ICC is that while the board’s primary revenue remains intact, it is the players who will experience the financial ramifications linked to their performance and participation in the tournament.
