Assam Achieves Historic 42% Drop in Secondary School Dropout Rates
Secondary school dropout rates in Assam have significantly dropped by 42% over the past decade, according to data released by the state government on Tuesday. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma shared this information on a microblogging platform, highlighting that school enrolment has reached an all-time high in the state.
Sarma emphasized the importance of this achievement, stating, “We are not just building infrastructure; we are building capacity at scale. In the last 10 years, secondary school dropouts are down by 42% as more students in Assam are now in school than ever.” He described the decline in dropout rates as a major victory for the government’s education policies and expressed a commitment to continue efforts towards achieving zero dropouts in Assam.
Officials from the education department noted that the decrease in dropout rates can be attributed to various policy measures. These include the expansion of school infrastructure, teacher recruitment, digital initiatives, scholarship programs, mid-day meal coverage, and the provision of free textbooks and uniforms. Enhanced monitoring of student attendance, particularly at the secondary level, has also played a critical role.
Targeted initiatives aimed at girls, children from economically disadvantaged backgrounds, and marginalized communities have further contributed to improved retention rates. Educationists believe that maintaining a strong focus on teaching quality, providing effective counseling, promoting skill-oriented learning, and fostering community engagement will be essential in reaching the government’s goal of eliminating school dropouts.
Looking ahead, officials stated the government plans to continue advancing educational reforms with additional investments in school infrastructure, teacher training, and support systems to ensure that every child successfully completes secondary education.
