Congress-MNF Alliance Aims to Form LADC Executive: What’s Next?
Days after the Mizo National Front (MNF) severed its ties with the ruling Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM), a newly formed alliance between the Congress and MNF has staked its claim to establish the next executive body in the Lai Autonomous District Council (LADC) in Lawngtlai district, south Mizoram, according to a party official. Lallenmawia Jongte, the secretary of the MNF’s media and publicity cell, announced that the two parties reached a post-election understanding and formed the United Legislature Party (ULP).
The ULP has elected C. Lalsawmzuala from the MNF as its leader, who formally claimed the formation of the next executive committee in the 25-member council before State Governor Vijay Kumar Singh on Friday. According to Jongte, the agreement stipulates that the MNF will hold the positions of Chief Executive Member (CEM) and Deputy CEM, while the Congress will take the chairman’s seat. The ULP currently enjoys the support of 15 council members, exceeding the necessary majority of 13.
The LADC has experienced a political deadlock for over a month following the council elections on December 3, which resulted in no party gaining an absolute majority. The results, announced on December 9, revealed that the MNF emerged as the largest party, securing 8 out of 20 contested seats, while Congress followed closely with 7 seats from 14 candidates. The ZPM managed to win only 6 out of 25 seats, despite contesting all positions, and the BJP secured 2 seats from 10 nominations. Additionally, two independent candidates, including former CEM V. Zirsanga, were elected.
Initially, the MNF and Congress had signed a pre-poll agreement, which Congress later dissolved, accusing the MNF of trying to entice elected members from their party. Following this, the Congress and ZPM attempted to form a combined executive committee, but this agreement fell through. In a surprising twist, the ZPM and MNF joined forces to establish the Lairam Legislature Party (LLP) on December 14, subsequently claiming to form the upcoming executive committee.
However, the MNF severed ties with the ZPM and exited the LLP on Tuesday, citing unresolved political issues.
