DESAM Locks Offices in Imphal: Urgent 72-Hour Ultimatum to Government
The Democratic Students Alliance of Manipur (DESAM), a leading student organization, has heightened its protest by issuing a 72-hour ultimatum to the state government. The group is demanding the appointment of regular principals and the reinstatement of transferred teachers to enhance education quality in Manipur.
This action comes in response to escalating frustration over a critical shortage of regular principals and teachers, which has adversely affected academic activities in various government institutions across the state. As a part of its demonstration against the declining state of teacher education, DESAM volunteers locked the principal offices of the Dhana Manjuri College of Teacher Education (DMCTE) and the Hindi Teacher Training College in Imphal on January 7, 2026.
At the protest site, DESAM Secretary General N. Thoithoiba addressed the media, warning of further agitation if the government does not address their demands within the given timeframe. He pointed out that while the Manipur government had previously issued notifications for the hiring of contractual teachers and additional staff to mitigate the shortages, these efforts have been insufficient.
Thoithoiba highlighted that years of administrative neglect have pushed both colleges toward the risk of losing accreditation from the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE), which would have a detrimental impact on teacher education in Manipur in the near future.
The lack of teachers at both institutions has compelled students to abandon their studies in favor of self-study or to depend on temporary volunteer support, which they believe is inadequate for advanced classes and exam preparation. This intensified protest is a continuation of ongoing demonstrations within Manipur’s education sector, where teachers have also been protesting against delayed salaries and unmet government promises.
