Assam Rifles and DRI Seize Gold Biscuits and Cash Worth Over Rs 21 Crore
Assam Rifles, in conjunction with the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI), has successfully seized gold bars and unaccounted Indian currency valued at over ₹21 crore during a coordinated operation in Agartala, Tripura, officials reported on Tuesday. The operation targeted the localities of Shantipara and Dhaleshwar, prompted by credible intelligence regarding the trafficking and storage of smuggled gold and illicit cash.
Following the intelligence, Assam Rifles personnel conducted thorough searches, resulting in the recovery of approximately 14 kg of gold biscuits. The estimated market value of the confiscated gold is around ₹19 crore. Additionally, the operation yielded ₹2.87 crore in Indian currency, which is believed to be linked to organized smuggling activities in the region.
This seizure highlights one of the most significant recoveries in recent months and underscores the intensified efforts of enforcement agencies to combat economic crimes and cross-border smuggling in the northeastern states. Tripura, which shares an international border with Bangladesh, has frequently been exploited by smuggling syndicates, leading to heightened vigilance from security and intelligence operatives.
The seized gold biscuits and cash have been handed over to the DRI for further examination. The agency has initiated legal action under relevant laws to investigate the origin of the gold, identify individuals involved in the smuggling network, and dismantle the broader operations behind these illegal activities.
Authorities are also probing whether the recovered consignment was destined for further distribution across the country. As of now, no arrests have been officially confirmed.
