Join the Movement: SDF Highlights Sikkim’s Poor Road Conditions Online

The opposition Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF) launched a month-long online campaign on January 2, aimed at showcasing what it describes as the deteriorating road conditions across Sikkim, directly confronting the ruling Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM) regarding its governance. This initiative, dubbed the SKM Road Report, will include constituency-specific videos documenting road conditions throughout the Himalayan state. The SDF intends to use this campaign to present visual evidence of on-the-ground realities to the public during January.

SDF vice-president Suman Chamling indicated that the campaign emerges against the backdrop of the SKM government’s much-publicized promise of BIPASA-Bijli, Pani, Sadak (electricity, water, roads)—which was a cornerstone of its agenda. Almost two years into the government’s term, Chamling contends that the state of road infrastructure tells a contrasting story.

“From rural areas to urban centers, roads are in a state of neglect, posing significant risks to public safety and creating daily challenges for commuters, students, patients, and traders,” Chamling stated, emphasizing that poor road conditions have become a regular burden for Sikkim’s residents.

The SKM Road Report aims to hold the current government accountable by making the populace’s experiences visible. The SDF plans to methodically release footage from every constituency to underscore what it perceives as a growing gap between the SKM government’s promises and its actual performance.

“The SDF insists that infrastructure development cannot be limited to slogans and publicity efforts. Roads are a basic necessity and reflect the priorities of good governance,” Chamling added, reaffirming that the party will continue to responsibly raise public issues while demanding accountability from those in power and standing firmly with the people of Sikkim.
