Trump’s Controversial Decision: National Guard Withdrawal from Major Cities
US President Donald Trump announced on January 1 that his administration will withdraw the National Guard from Chicago, Los Angeles, and Portland shortly after the US Supreme Court ruled against the government’s proposal. In a post on his social media platform, Truth Social, Trump stated that while crime rates had declined due to the presence of the National Guard in these cities, local governance had been severely lacking. He remarked, “Portland, Los Angeles, and Chicago were gone if it weren’t for the Federal Government stepping in.”
Trump added that the deployment might return in a different and stronger form if crime rates rise again, referring to the Democratic mayors and governors of the areas as “greatly incompetent.” This decision follows the Supreme Court blocking a plan to send the National Guard to Chicago to support US Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents.
Democrats have voiced skepticism over the motivations behind deploying the National Guard, suggesting political calculations rather than genuine public safety concerns. The court rejected Trump’s proposal with a 6-3 vote, explaining that the government failed to establish a legal basis for the military action in Illinois.
The controversy began on October 4 when Trump federally activated 300 members of the Illinois National Guard, particularly around Chicago. Following this, members of the Texas National Guard were also sent to the city. However, on October 9, a US District Court issued a temporary restraining order against these actions.
This order was confirmed by the US Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit on October 16, which allowed the federalization of the National Guard but prohibited their deployment. Afterward, the Trump administration sought a ruling from the Supreme Court.
