A woman from Dzongu, North Sikkim, tragically died after allegedly being attacked with a knife at a private residence in Marchak Chorten, Gangtok district, on Monday afternoon. The suspect, identified as 25-year-old Manhang Subba, has been apprehended and is reportedly a citizen of Nepal currently residing in Lingdong, Upper Dzongu.
According to a First Information Report (FIR) filed with the police, the victim and her cousin sister had traveled to Marchak Chorten on December 17 to participate in the last rites of a family member. They had been staying at a relative’s house during this period.
On December 29, around 2 p.m., Subba allegedly entered the home, inquiring about the victim before proceeding to the room where she was sitting. He reportedly attacked her with a knife, leaving her severely injured and unconscious on the floor in a pool of blood.
Emergency responders quickly transported the victim to CRH, Manipal, for medical attention. Unfortunately, she succumbed to her injuries while receiving treatment.
In the aftermath of the incident, a forensic team, accompanied by a photographer and a fingerprint expert from the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), arrived at the crime scene to collect blood samples and other evidence. The samples were forwarded to the Investigating Officer for analysis. Subba underwent a medical examination and was formally arrested.
Authorities have registered the case under Sections 103(1) and 329(4) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, and the investigation is ongoing.
