Tensions Rise as Police Use Tear Gas Against Protesters Over Tragic Death
Locals in Imphal, Manipur, clashed with police after a 25-year-old housewife was found dead under suspicious circumstances, leading to allegations of foul play involving her husband and in-laws. The deceased, identified as Khaidem Ongbi Chanambam Chaoba Devi, was discovered near her home around 3:30 PM on Saturday.
In response, a group of protesters, predominantly women, gathered around the body, accusing her husband, Khaidem Dhaneshore (commonly known as Boynaocha), of murder. They obstructed a police team attempting to investigate the situation. Authorities responded by deploying tear gas and firing warning shots to disperse the crowd.
The incident took place in the Wangoi Mangang Khaidem Leikai area, falling under the jurisdiction of the Wangoi police station. While police awaited forensic experts for a thorough investigation, relatives of the deceased and community members initiated protests, targeting those detained in the case.
With additional police forces arriving, the situation was eventually brought under control. Law enforcement stated that a preliminary investigation was underway, and further details are pending.
