Assam’s Vigilance: 18 Bangladeshis Deported for Illegal Entry
Assam has deported 18 foreign nationals who entered the state illegally, according to Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, emphasizing a strong stance on border security. He announced this action via a post on X, without revealing the individuals’ identities or nationalities, and framed it as part of the state’s broader security and development initiatives.
In his statement, Sarma remarked, “They dream of starving India and taking over Assam and the Northeast. Meanwhile, in Assam, we’re busy feeding development, driving growth, and sending 18 illegals on an all-expense-paid exit tour,” adding, “Too bad for them: Assam isn’t hungry, just vigilant and decisive!”
Assam shares a 267.5-kilometer international border with Bangladesh, passing through the districts of Sribhumi, Cachar, Dhubri, and South Salmara-Mankachar, which makes the area a crucial corridor for cross-border movement. The state has an Integrated Check Post (ICP) at Sutarkandi in Sribhumi, one of three along the India-Bangladesh border in the Northeast; the others are at Dawki in Meghalaya and Akhaura in Tripura. An additional ICP operates at Darranga in Assam, bordering Bhutan.
Security agencies have consistently highlighted the importance of increased vigilance in the region, especially following political unrest in Bangladesh last year. Assam Police has indicated that, in collaboration with the Border Security Force, they will take strict legal action to deter any attempts by non-Indians to cross into the country illegally from Bangladesh.
Authorities also reassured that Indian passport holders stranded in Bangladesh would still be allowed to return through designated entry points in Assam.
