Transforming Connectivity: Feel the Ease with New Escalators at Chromepet and Taramani Foot Over Bridges!
In a significant boost for pedestrians in Chennai, foot over bridges (FOBs) at Taramani, the Madras Export Processing Zone (MEPZ), and Chromepet are set to receive new escalators. The Highways Department has placed an order for five pairs of escalators, with an investment of approximately ₹7.5 crore. This initiative comes as a much-needed relief, especially for senior citizens and those with limited mobility.
Currently, the existing escalators have been dismantled due to operational failures. The contracting company responsible has committed to repairing the faulty units and aims to install the new escalators within 10 to 15 days per pair. A project official expressed optimism that the installation would be completed by the end of next month.
Addressing concerns about the previous escalators, the official noted that frequent mechanical failures were largely due to debris and dust obstructing their operation. To prevent a recurrence, the new escalators will be maintained by the contractor for one year, after which the Highways Department will take over the maintenance responsibilities.
Local activist V. Santhanam, a Chromepet resident, welcomed the project, highlighting the previous absence of such facilities as a source of difficulty for pedestrians, especially the elderly. “Many were forced to use the escalator steps as ordinary stairs. It’s crucial that the department ensures proper maintenance and educates the public on effective use. A watchman should be present around the clock for oversight,” he emphasized.
Conversely, Mohammad Rafi, who operates a rice wholesale shop in Taramani, indicated that the existing FOB near his establishment sees little foot traffic. Many pedestrians still prefer to cross the road directly, often encountering obstacles like beggars on the steps and insufficient lighting within the bridge. He believes that the addition of escalators could encourage more people to use the FOB.
Adding to the conversation, autorickshaw driver Manikandan reflected on the need for similar infrastructure near high-traffic areas, such as Chennai Central Station. “During peak hours, people frequently dash across the road. In contrast, the FOB by the school in Anna Nagar is well-utilized by both students and the public. Notably, a film shoot took place on that bridge six months ago, showcasing its popularity,” he explained.
As Chennai continues to grow, the enhancement of pedestrian facilities like these escalators plays a critical role in ensuring the safety and convenience of residents. With the promise of new installations and improved maintenance, the city is taking a positive step toward better infrastructure for its citizens.
