Tripura’s Crime Rate Plummets in 2025: A New Era for Safety Under CM Manik Saha
Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha announced on Saturday that the state’s overall crime rate has significantly decreased compared to 2023, indicating improved law and order through November 2025. This announcement came after a high-level review meeting on law and order at Pragna Bhawan in Agartala, attended by senior police officials, including Superintendents of Police and Officers-in-Charge of police stations.
Saha, who also oversees the Home portfolio, highlighted the essential role of police stations as the foundation of the public safety system and emphasized the need for professionalism and accountability at all levels. “We have 90 police stations and nine women police stations in the state. In the past, political leaders had too much influence over Officers-in-Charge, leading to indiscipline. We must change this culture. I have never contacted an OC. Those in power for 35 years benefitted from such practices, but now officers are expected to work independently and responsibly,” he asserted.
He underscored that police personnel are part of society and must perform their duties with integrity and fairness, comparing their uniform to an ornament that commands respect. “Previously, police officers were identified by political affiliations; this should never happen. Officers will be evaluated solely based on their performance. I do not interfere in police operations, but I hold bi-weekly meetings with Superintendents and District Magistrates to clarify any issues as needed.”
Saha instructed Officers-in-Charge to ensure careful monitoring of FIR registrations and emphasized the importance of proper documentation. He also stressed the necessity of timely charge sheet submissions so that justice is not delayed. Furthermore, he mentioned that counseling could be arranged for any police personnel showing signs of distress, as physical fitness is crucial for their duties.
Presenting crime statistics, Saha noted a marked decline in major crime categories. Crimes against the human body dropped from 1,385 cases in 2023 to 753 cases by November 2025. Similarly, crimes against women fell from 791 to 627 during the same timeframe. Overall, reported crime cases decreased from 5,002 in 2023 to 3,386 in 2025, demonstrating a significant reduction.
He also discussed issues related to drug trafficking, reiterating the central government’s zero-tolerance policy, a stance supported by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah. “The current government will maintain strict law and order. We are closely monitoring potential communal tensions, touting, and other anti-social activities. Such actions will not be permitted,” Saha added, emphasizing the need for collective efforts to build a New India and a New Tripura.
The meeting was attended by Director General of Police Anurag, Chief Secretary J K Sinha, and other senior officials.
