Alarming Rise: Cyber Crimes Surge Over 60% in Just Three Years!
Cyber crime cases in India have increased dramatically, rising over 60 percent from 52,974 cases in 2021 to 86,420 cases in 2023. This alarming trend was detailed in data presented to the Rajya Sabha by the Ministry of Home Affairs, citing figures from the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB). Financially motivated crimes are a significant driver of this surge. Online fraud cases rose from 14,007 in 2021 to 19,466 in 2023, reflecting a nearly 39 percent increase. Cheating-related cyber offences saw an even steeper escalation of over 150 percent, climbing from 6,343 cases in 2021 to 16,943 cases in 2023, as reported by Minister of State for Home Affairs Bandi Sanjay Kumar.
Additionally, computer-related offences rose by 77.4 percent, indicating a growing digital presence among both citizens and criminals. The overall number of cases registered under the Information Technology (IT) Act increased from 27,427 in 2021 to 44,237 in 2023, a rise of over 61 percent. Cyber crimes documented under the Indian Penal Code (IPC) also surged, from 25,384 cases in 2021 to 41,849 cases in 2023, an increase of 64.8 percent.
The minister highlighted that crimes such as cyber stalking and bullying, particularly affecting women and children, remained distressingly high, with 1,305 cases reported in 2023. State-wise analysis revealed significant regional disparities; Karnataka was identified as the cybercrime hotspot, reporting 21,889 cases in 2023, followed by Telangana with 18,236 cases, and Uttar Pradesh with 10,794 cases.
Overall, 202,940 cyber crime cases were recorded between 2021 and 2023, with annual numbers rising from 52,974 in 2021 to 65,893 in 2022 and reaching 86,420 in 2023. Notably, Kerala experienced a staggering increase in cases, jumping more than five times from 626 in 2021 to 3,295 in 2023.
Since 2021, more than Rs 7,130 crore has been saved through prompt reporting via the Citizen Financial Cyber Fraud Reporting and Management System, which has managed over 23.02 lakh complaints. Furthermore, authorities have blocked 11.14 lakh SIM cards and 2.96 lakh IMEIs associated with cyber crime. This urgent issue highlights the need for enhanced cybersecurity measures and public awareness in combating the growing threat of cyber crime in India.
