34 BJP MLAs Unite in Delhi: A Strong Push for Elected Government
The BJP Manipur Legislature Party convened its first meeting since President’s Rule was imposed in the state, marking a pivotal moment for the party as it navigates governance challenges in the conflict-ridden region. The meeting, held at the BJP headquarters in New Delhi, featured prominent party figures such as National General Secretary (Organisation) B.L. Santhosh and Northeast coordinator Sambit Patra.
According to party insiders, discussions focused on peace, stability, and strategies to move forward in Manipur. BJP MLA L. Shushindro Meitei from Khurai Assembly constituency reported that nearly all party legislators attended, although a few had pressing commitments. The meeting took place from 5:30 PM to 7 PM and included 34 out of 37 BJP MLAs in the 60-member Manipur Assembly, with representation from the Kuki community.
This gathering is significant as BJP lawmakers, particularly from the valley regions, have been advocating for the restoration of a popular government since President’s Rule was enacted on February 13. The rule followed the resignation of N. Biren Singh as Chief Minister amid escalating ethnic tensions.
Before heading to New Delhi, BJP legislators expressed to the media at Imphal airport that the meeting would likely center on government formation. One legislator highlighted the urgency, stating, “With elections approaching in 2027, campaigning under President’s Rule will pose difficulties for us. Hence, restoring a popular government, even temporarily, is essential.”
The assembly is currently under suspended animation, a situation that has persisted since the imposition of President’s Rule. Speculation about a return to an elected government has intensified, especially after Santhosh and Patra’s three-day visit to Manipur last month, where they held multiple discussions with party leaders and MLAs.
In October, 26 BJP MLAs, including Singh, urged for the establishment of a popular government during their meeting in New Delhi with the senior leaders. Singh has reassured that all BJP legislators in the state remain united in their efforts to form a government that reflects the will of the people.
