New UP BJP Chief Advocates Unity and Coordination for a Stronger Party
In his inaugural address as the new president of the Uttar Pradesh Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Pankaj Chaudhary emphasized unity within the party, asserting his commitment to inclusive leadership aimed at fostering solutions and enhancing coordination between the party and the government. Speaking at an event in Lucknow, where Union Minister Piyush Goyal officially declared him the 17th UP BJP chief, Chaudhary stated, “I do not want to rule, but will play the role of one who coordinates, one who finds solutions, and takes everyone along as a leader.”
Flanked by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and deputies Keshav Prasad Maurya and Brajesh Pathak, Chaudhary stressed the importance of understanding leadership as not just giving orders but actively listening and addressing concerns. He outlined four guiding principles for his leadership: Organization, Connection, Communication, and Coordination. With Assembly elections scheduled for 2027, he placed significant importance on the contributions of party workers, declaring them his top priority.
Chaudhary reflected on his political journey, from participating in numerous elections from 1991 to 2004 with the support of party workers to now rallying them for future contests. He highlighted that they are invaluable to him, stating, “For me, you are supreme.” As the sole nominee for the position, he expressed gratitude towards party leadership and the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) for this opportunity.
“I have served various roles in my career, but being the state BJP president is the most significant responsibility I have undertaken,” he shared. He also praised the BJP’s internal democracy, contrasting it with dynastic politics, which allows ordinary members to ascend to leadership roles.
Chief Minister Adityanath described Chaudhary as an experienced organizational worker and the “new captain” of the party, suggesting his election would invigorate both the party and the state government in alignment with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision. Deputy Chief Minister Maurya affirmed that under Chaudhary’s leadership, the party would strive for an even stronger majority in the 2027 elections than the 312 seats won in 2017.
Chaudhary, hailing from the influential Kurmi community, began his political career in the late 1980s at the grassroots level in the Gorakhpur Municipal Corporation before becoming Deputy Mayor. He entered national politics in 1991, winning his first Lok Sabha election from Maharajganj at just 27 years old. Over the years, he has successfully reclaimed this seat multiple times.
Following a cabinet reshuffle in 2021, he was appointed Minister of State in the Finance Ministry and returned to Modi’s Cabinet after retaining his seat in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
