House Witnesses Turmoil: Explosive Walkouts by Congress and AIUDF Members Amidst Chaos
Turmoil in Assam Assembly: Opposition Stages Walkout over Controversial Bills
GUWAHATI: The Assam Assembly experienced significant unrest as discussions over various issues, including a controversial land protection bill, smart meters, and an assault incident in Sivasagar, led to walkouts by Congress and AIUDF members. The chaos began with strong objections to the introduction of the Assam Land and Revenue Regulation (Amendment) Bill and the Assam (Temporarily Settled Areas) Tenancy (Amendment) Bill, which the opposition argued violated the Constitution by restricting land sales between communities. AIUDF members vehemently opposed the bills, rushing to the speaker’s well.
The Speaker advised the opposition to voice their concerns during the bill debates, but AIUDF and Congress members walked out in protest. Earlier, Akhil Gogoi, AIUDF’s Aminul Haque, and Leader of Opposition Debabrata Saikia had proposed adjournment motions on separate issues: the Sivasagar assault, smart meters, and land sale restrictions.
Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pijush Hazarika countered these motions, stating the Sivasagar incident had been resolved and dismissing concerns about smart meters as unfounded rumors. He suggested installing both smart and manual meters in MLA residences to compare results. On the land sale issue, Hazarika argued that the opposition’s stance was inconsistent, drawing parallels with their support for acts like Sharia while opposing the Uniform Civil Code.
Unsatisfied with Hazarika’s responses, Congress and AIUDF MLAs staged a noisy walkout, further intensifying the assembly’s disorder.
