Controversy Erupts Over MLA Khemchand’s Visit to Ukhrul Relief Camp
A visit by MLA Y. Khemchand to the Litan Sareikhong Relief Camp in Ukhrul on December 8 has sparked controversy among camp authorities and local organizations, who claim the visit was not properly coordinated. The MLA arrived around 9:30 a.m., accompanied by a group of BJP workers, at a time when many internally displaced persons (IDPs) were away for daily work, leaving mostly women, children, and the elderly at the camp. According to the camp in-charge, Lunkhojang Baite, the visit was neither planned nor communicated in advance and was brief, during which photographs were taken.
Following the visit, camp representatives raised concerns over media coverage, stating that some reports seemed to blend the MLA’s stop with an unrelated interview by a journalist. They suggested this may have created the impression that the MLA had engaged more deeply with camp residents than he actually did. The authorities urged media representatives to prioritize accuracy in their reporting.
The Kuki Inpi Ukhrul District (KIU) also voiced its objections, labeling the visit a breach of protocol. They noted that the presence of a security detail unsettled IDPs who are already living in uncertainty. The KIU pointed out that no district-level Kuki organizations or local youth groups were informed prior to the MLA’s visit.
Furthermore, the KIU asserted that while Meitei individuals are allowed to travel through the district for peaceful coexistence, this does not equate to permission for political visits without prior consultation. Both the KIU and the camp authorities called for greater consideration and transparency from political leaders and media personnel in situations that involve displaced families.
