Jaintia National Council Stirs Up Protest Against Cement Plant in Meghalaya
The Central Executive Committee (CEC) of the Jaintia National Council (JNC) announced a mass protest against the proposed Shree Cement Integrated Cement Plant located in Daistong village. This decision, made during an urgent virtual meeting on December 8, stems from the government’s failure to address longstanding complaints regarding the alleged illegal transfer of tribal land.
JNC President Sambormi Lyngdoh expressed the organization’s frustration in a video statement, asserting that they have “waited long enough” for a government response. He made it clear that without action from the authorities following their complaints, they would not remain idle. “We have come to one clear decision: as we warned earlier, if there is no response from the government after our submission of complaints, we will not sit idle with folded hands,” he said.
In recent weeks, the Council has sent several communications to various governmental authorities, including a formal complaint to the Deputy Commissioner of East Jaintia Hills on November 28, urgent clarification letters to the Chief Executive Member of the JHADC on December 3, and a detailed complaint to the Commissioner of Land Revenue in Shillong on December 4. “Unfortunately, to date, there has been no response from any authority,” Lyngdoh added.
The JNC has scheduled a public demonstration for December 10 at the Deputy Commissioner’s Office in Khliehriat. This event will feature placards, speeches, and a gathering of supporters. In a call for unity, the Council urged residents of Daistong and surrounding areas impacted by the cement plant to join the protest without fear. “Do not fear and do not feel uncomfortable. JNC stands firmly with you. Come join us on December 10,” Lyngdoh appealed.
Additionally, he encouraged the community in East Jaintia Hills to engage more actively in the issue rather than simply commenting on social media. “Show your love for our land, not just online. Step up and support this vital issue that impacts our community, our land, and our future,” he urged.
The upcoming protest highlights the community’s concerns about environmental and land rights issues, marking a significant stand against perceived injustices.
