On Friday, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that the Assam Gana Parishad (AGP) is set to play a key role in the upcoming elections as a part of the alliance with the BJP. Discussions regarding seat-sharing between the BJP and AGP have reportedly advanced to a more developed stage. The Chief Minister indicated that by reinforcing the long-term partnership between the two parties, most seats are likely to be allocated to AGP candidates.
These statements followed a meeting between Chief Minister Sarma and senior AGP leader and Minister Keshav Mahanta last Wednesday. Sarma mentioned that formal discussions with the regional party would commence soon.
“The talks regarding seat allocation have progressed significantly. We are ready to work together in several constituencies, and there is a strong likelihood that AGP candidates will dominate many of the seats,” said Himanta Biswa Sarma.
He also noted plans to engage with other regional groups, such as the Rabha Hasong and Gan Shakti, aiming to finalize the alliance framework by January 15, prior to the Bihu festival.
In reaffirming the BJP’s commitment to prioritizing youth leadership, the Chief Minister expressed intentions to provide more opportunities to young men, women, and fresh faces in the upcoming elections. “Every year, we strive to include more youth and women in the BJP… This time, we expect even younger representatives than Tarun Gogoi,” he stated.
Sarma criticized the Congress party, contrasting its “lack of focus and internal confusion” to the development-driven vision of the BJP-led alliance. He accused Congress of wasting time on trivial matters while claiming that party leaders themselves lack confidence in their prospects for victory.
He further asserted that the region, including areas like Umrangshu and Karbi Anglong, saw no development during Congress’s 15 years in power. According to Sarma, peace and stability returned to these regions only after the BJP took charge, contrasting this with a period marked by unrest and the presence of military forces under Congress rule.
