TU Students Rally Against New Pro-VC Appointment Amid Rising Tensions
GUWAHATI: Tensions at Tezpur University have escalated after the administration appointed Prof. Joya Chakraborty as the new Pro Vice-Chancellor, a decision students have vehemently opposed. They argue the appointment was made without prior consultation and disregards the significant issues they have been raising since September.
For 76 days, students have protested against the absence and alleged misgovernance of Vice-Chancellor Shambhu Nath Singh, who has been absent from campus amidst the ongoing agitation. This absence has resulted in considerable disruption to both academic and administrative functions at the university.
Students claim that appointing a Pro-VC at this juncture is merely an attempt to divert attention from their key demands, which include accountability for the Vice-Chancellor and addressing long-standing administrative issues. “We are not against any individual. But bringing in a new Pro-VC when the VC is missing and serious allegations remain unanswered makes no sense,” stated a student representative. “This seems like another effort to placate the campus rather than address the real problems.”
Many students have expressed concern about the university making significant administrative decisions while the leadership crisis remains unresolved. They are urging the Ministry of Education to step in and facilitate the appointment of an independent body to investigate the situation.
As of now, the university has not provided a detailed explanation regarding the rationale for the Pro-VC appointment or the process by which it was made. Students are adamant that their protests will continue until the administration offers a transparent explanation, reverses decisions made bypassing proper processes, and reinstates effective governance on campus.
Currently, Tezpur University remains in a precarious state, with no visible path toward resolving the ongoing unrest or restoring academic normalcy.
