Gaurav Urges Bharat Ratna for Zubeen Garg in Lok Sabha Amidst Cheers
Deputy Leader of the Congress in the Lok Sabha, Gaurav Gogoi, has called for the posthumous conferment of the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian award, on the iconic singer and cultural figure Zubeen Garg. Speaking during the winter session of Parliament in Guwahati, Gogoi not only made this emotional appeal but also raised questions about the circumstances surrounding Garg’s death, demanding to know who is responsible for the “mysterious” demise of the beloved artist, which occurred abroad after attending a government event.
In his address, Gogoi, who represents the Jorhat constituency, highlighted Garg’s significant contributions by stating, “He taught us how to overcome personal trauma and not be divided by religion and caste.” His remarks echo similar sentiments previously expressed by Debabrata Saikia, the Congress CLP leader, during a winter session in the Assam Assembly.
Gogoi painted a larger picture of Garg’s vision for Assam, asserting that the late artist dreamed of a peaceful, cohesive state free from fear and hatred. He referenced Garg as the “Kanchenjunga” of Assam, symbolizing the state’s identity alongside the one-horned rhinoceros and tea. Reflecting on the impact of Garg’s music in the 1990s, he noted how the singer energized the Assamese people and became a beacon of moral courage.
As part of their campaign for justice, Congress in Assam has organized multiple rally events under the banner “Justice for Zubeen.” Gogoi pointed out that while several arrests have been made concerning Zubeen’s death in Singaporean waters, several questions remain unanswered. Notably, he emphasized the contradiction in authorities labeling it a murder while it occurred during an event organized by the Indian government. “We want to know how a murder happened on foreign soil during a program organized by the government of India,” he stated.
