Unfinished: Over 500,000 MGNREGA Projects Awaiting Completion in the State
It is disheartening to report that over 514,000 projects under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) remain incomplete in Assam. The Nagaon district leads with 34,572 unfinished projects among the state’s 35 districts. As per statistics from The Sentinel, as of November 14, 2025, the number of incomplete MGNREGA works highlights a troubling situation, with the panchayats responsible for their implementation and the Commissionerate of Panchayat and Rural Development (P&RD) overseeing and directing the process.
The statistics indicate that the number of unfinished MGNREGA works by financial year includes 73,249 for 2022-23 and earlier, 62,523 for 2023-24, 118,120 for 2024-25, and a staggering 260,376 for 2025-26 as of the same date. Following Nagaon, other districts with high counts of incomplete projects include Cachar with 27,451, Dhubri with 26,128, Kamrup with 26,087, and Kokrajhar with 25,942. Conversely, Kamrup (M) has the fewest unfinished projects at just 1,851.
In the financial year 2024-25, a total of 308,245 MGNREGA projects were initiated in Assam, of which 190,125 were completed, resulting in a completion rate of 61.68%. In the current financial year of 2025-26, the state has started 308,952 MGNREGA projects. Yet, by November 14, 2025, only 48,576 of these had been completed, leaving 260,376 projects still unfinished-an alarming completion rate of just 15.72%. This financial year is set to conclude on March 31, 2026.
Given these concerning figures, P&RD Minister Ranjeet Kumar Dass is urged to take immediate action to address the issue of incomplete MGNREGA projects in Assam.
