Tezpur University Finance Officer Resigns Amid Rising Campus Tensions
The Finance Officer of Tezpur University in Assam, Braja Bandhu Mishra, resigned from his position on December 1, citing ongoing protests and allegations of corruption. Mishra had been absent from the campus since September 22, shortly after the protests began. In his resignation statement, he mentioned the “current atmosphere of unrest” and referred to financial irregularities associated with his time at the university.
Students hailed his resignation as a significant victory in their struggle, claiming it validates their accusations of mismanagement and misuse of funds. They allege that high-ranking officials, including Vice-Chancellor Prof. Shambhu Nath Singh, who has also been unavailable, are involved in the issues prompting the protests.
Now in their third month, the demonstrations have led to a complete shutdown of the campus, a step taken collectively by students, faculty, and non-teaching staff. Protesters have stated that this shutdown will remain in effect until the Union Ministry of Education initiates an impartial investigation into the corruption claims and ensures responsible governance.
Representatives from the campus community pointed out that while Mishra’s resignation bolsters their position, it does not signify the end of their agitation. They committed to continuing their protest until all their grievances are addressed.
