Shillong Takes Bold Action: Banning Overloaded Hay Trucks to Combat Fire Risks
The District Magistrate of East Khasi Hills has imposed a ban on overloaded hay-laden trucks and pickup vehicles from operating within the city limits of Shillong due to serious fire safety concerns. This prohibitory order was issued under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita on December 1. Authorities have raised alarms that these overloaded vehicles pose significant dangers, particularly when they come into contact with overhead electric wires, which could lead to major fires in the city.
Additionally, the ban addresses another pressing issue: hay falling from improperly secured loads has been creating hazards on residential streets, contributing to public nuisances and obstructing the district’s ongoing annual cleaning efforts. Violators of this order will face legal repercussions under Section 223 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. The enforcement of the ban is effective immediately and will remain indefinitely in place.
While district officials have yet to provide specific alternatives for hay transporters, the order indicates that properly secured loads that adhere to legal weight limits may still be allowed.
