India Ranks Third in Military Power: Where Does Pakistan Stand?
India has made a significant leap in its global military power ranking, recently published by the Lowy Institute in the “Asia Power Index 2025.” According to this report, India has secured the third position on the list and is classified as a “Major Power.” Notably, Pakistan did not make it into the top ten, ranking instead at sixteenth place among neighboring countries.
The “Asia Power Index,” released annually, evaluates military strength across Asia, assessing variables such as a nation’s military capabilities, defense networks, economic strength, diplomatic influence, culture, and future resources. Data indicates that India is consistently enhancing its influence in the region. In the 2025 assessment, India received a score of 40.00, signifying its status as a major power, with potential for further growth in the coming years. Meanwhile, China maintains its top position as the leading power in Asia and ranks second only to the United States among global superpowers.
For context, the scores listed are as follows: the United States holds a score of 80.5, categorizing it as a superpower; China follows at 73.7, also classified as a superpower; India stands at 40.0 (Major Power); Japan at 38.8 (Medium Power); Russia at 32.1 (Medium Power); Australia at 31.8 (Medium Power); South Korea at 31.5 (Medium Power); Singapore at 26.5 (Medium Power); Indonesia at 22.5 (Medium Power); and Malaysia at 20.6 (Medium Power).
Despite this positive outlook for India, it marks the lowest score for the United States since the Asia Power Index began in 2018. Analysts suggest that the policies adopted by Donald Trump upon entering power may have contributed to this decline. Moreover, China has been steadily narrowing the power gap with the U.S. Since 2019, Russia has enhanced its position in Asia, primarily due to increased regional presence and strategic military and economic partnerships with China and North Korea. Although Australia was expected to surpass Russia in 2024, Russia has recently regained its fifth position, while Japan has also demonstrated notable strength in this year’s rankings.
