The Winter Session of the Assam Legislative Assembly commenced its fourth day on Friday, focusing on pressing socio-economic issues, legislative reforms, and initiatives aimed at improving the welfare of citizens across the state.
Debabrata Saikia, the Leader of the Opposition and senior Congress MLA, is poised to introduce several bills aimed at enhancing protections and social security for gig and atypical workers. He will also propose a bill to improve sanitation services statewide. Additionally, Saikia plans to address significant challenges affecting the agriculture and tea sectors, advocating for measures to increase farmers’ incomes, enhance the welfare of tea garden workers, and ensure land allocation for landless families.
AIUDF legislator Ashraful Hussain is expected to put forward a proposal requiring universities, colleges, and examination boards to conduct exams promptly and declare results without unnecessary delays. He will also advocate for designating Katigarg in Cachar district as a co-district, to facilitate easier access to government services for residents who currently face long and costly journeys to Silchar.
Other legislators will raise critical issues such as the need for expanded cancer-care infrastructure, the provision of free treatment for critically ill patients, and a comprehensive rehabilitation policy for families affected by severe floods and river erosion. The growing incidence of crimes against women is also anticipated to spark debate in the House. Moreover, MLAs may call for improved transportation connectivity through the construction of new bridges and advocate for a special central financial package to combat flood and erosion challenges.
Additionally, a long-standing demand to confer Scheduled Tribe (ST) status on six indigenous communities-Tai Ahom, Moran, Matak, Koch Rajbongshi, Chutia, and Tea Tribes-will be addressed. This initiative aims to protect their rights and land ownership.
On the government side, ministers will present bills designed to fortify tribal autonomous councils and rectify gaps in land governance through necessary legal amendments.
With a broad spectrum of topics affecting diverse sectors and communities, this session is anticipated to feature robust discussions and pivotal decisions that will influence development and welfare priorities in Assam.
