India Urges Action: Call Out Denial of UNSC Permanent Membership Now
India has called for discrediting those opposing the expansion of the permanent membership of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) and advocating for Africa’s rightful representation. R. Ravindra, charge d’affaires of India’s UN Mission, highlighted that excluding Africa from the council’s permanent membership undermines the credibility of the UNSC. He spoke at the High-Level Open Debate on Peacebuilding and Sustaining Peace, hosted by Sierra Leone.
Ravindra emphasized India’s consistent support for permanent African seats in an expanded UNSC, aligning with the African consensus for two permanent seats and an increase in elected seats from three to five. He noted that nearly 70 percent of the UNSC’s peacekeeping missions are undertaken in Africa, stressing the continent’s significant stake in global peace and security.
In a further statement at the debate, Ravindra addressed the international threat posed by terrorism, impacting both peace and development. He reiterated India’s call for a comprehensive international anti-terrorism convention. Highlighting the link between development and peace, he pointed out India’s extensive development partnerships with Global South countries, with the cumulative value of these projects surpassing 40 billion dollars. Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s proposal for a comprehensive global development compact at the recent Voice of the Global South virtual Summit was also mentioned.
Sierra Leone’s Foreign Minister Alhaji Musa Timothy Kabba, who chaired the meeting, warned that global conflicts are exacerbated by a mix of geopolitical tensions, economic disparities, climate change, and the proliferation of weapons.
Together, these statements underscore the urgent need for UNSC reform and greater international cooperation to address global security and development challenges.
