Three expressions reflective of Gen Z culture are competing for the Oxford Word of the Year 2025, as identified by Oxford University Press through an analysis of its extensive 25-billion-word language dataset. This shortlist highlights the influence of younger online communities in shaping mainstream vocabulary, with all three terms emerging from digital culture. The contenders are “Aura farming,” “Biohack,” and “Rage bait.”
“Aura farming” refers to the practice of intentionally creating a cool, confident, or mysterious online persona. This term has gained traction among Gen Z users, who are keenly aware of the dynamics of social media influence and the concept of “main character” energy. “Biohack,” favored in wellness circles, describes the efforts of younger individuals experimenting with various routines, supplements, and gadgets to enhance their physical or mental performance. The term “Rage bait” is employed to describe social media posts specifically designed to elicit outrage and boost user engagement, reflecting a sharp critique of online interaction.
Oxford University Press commented that these three expressions are now “in the race” to symbolize 2025, a year characterized by identity-focused discussions, AI-enhanced online behavior, and the increasing prominence of youth slang. The publisher is launching a campaign across social media platforms to promote each word, providing an opportunity for the public to engage and vote.
Voting will close at 12 PM GMT on Thursday, November 27, with the winning term set to be announced on December 1, according to the organization’s official press release.
