Defiant Unity: Protesters Rally in Strong Support of Delhi Police Amid Outrage Over ‘Maoist Slogans’

A group of protesters gathered at India Gate on Tuesday to express their support for the Delhi police, following the arrest of 22 individuals the previous day. These arrests were made in connection to a protest against escalating air pollution in the capital, during which participants allegedly shouted pro-Maoist slogans. The demonstrators at India Gate voiced their demands for stringent action against those who supported the late Maoist leader Madvi Hidma during Sunday’s protest at the same location.

Videos circulating on social media appeared to show some attendees praising Hidma, who had been killed in an encounter in Andhra Pradesh earlier this month. Delhi Law Minister Kapil Mishra condemned the demonstration, claiming it was a pretext to glorify the Maoist leader. On X, he accused “jihadis and naxalites” of disguising themselves as social activists to further their agenda.

In response to these events, police have filed two FIRs, invoking charges of “imputations and assertions prejudicial to national integration” against the arrested individuals. This new classification falls under Section 197 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), which addresses the spread of false information that jeopardizes the nation’s sovereignty and integrity. An officer stated, “Currently, all 22 have been booked under the same Sections of the BNS. It is only when the chargesheet is prepared that specific charges will be linked to the protesters who were carrying posters or chanting slogans.”

As social tensions simmer, Delhi’s air quality continues to deteriorate, classified as “very poor” on Tuesday. Officials predict little improvement for at least the next three days. In response to this worsening situation, authorities are enforcing measures aimed at reducing air pollution. District Magistrates and Deputy Commissioners of Police are overseeing a directive requiring that 50% of staff in all Delhi government offices work from home. Existing enforcement teams from various agencies have been mobilized to ensure compliance with this work-from-home policy issued by the government.

As the capital grapples with both social unrest and environmental challenges, the situation remains fluid. With divergent perspectives on the protests and ongoing concerns about air quality, the Delhi government and law enforcement are navigating complex dynamics that intertwine public health with issues of national security.

The spotlight is now on how authorities will address the intertwining issues of advocacy against pollution and the implications of the recent protests. The unfolding narrative at India Gate continues to capture the attention of residents and policymakers alike, as Delhi faces the dual challenge of environmental degradation and the management of civil dissent.

With both the air quality crisis and public demonstrations escalating, it is evident that these issues will require careful consideration and a balanced approach from both citizens and officials, aiming for a healthier, more harmonious Delhi.
