Tragic Loss: IAS Officer Mahantesh Bilagi and Two Others Die in Shocking Car Overturn in Karnataka
Karnataka State Mineral Corporation Limited (KSMCL) Managing Director Mahantesh Bilagi tragically lost his life in a car accident on Tuesday evening. The 50-year-old IAS officer’s vehicle overturned in Jewargi taluk near Gaunalli cross while he was traveling with relatives to attend a family wedding in Bidar. The accident resulted in the deaths of Bilagi’s relatives, Shankar, 52, and Iranna.
Prior to his role at KSMCL, Bilagi held significant positions including Managing Director of the Bangalore Electric Supply Company Limited (BESCOM) and served as Deputy Commissioner in Davangere and Assistant Commissioner in Dharwad. His career was marked by a commitment to public service and efficiency, earning him respect across various districts in Karnataka.
The incident occurred around 6 PM when the group was en route from Belagavi. Reports indicate that the driver lost control of the vehicle, which collided with a bridge along the highway. While Bilagi was rushed to a nearby hospital, he succumbed to his injuries soon after arrival. A case has been registered at the Jewargi Police Station, with investigations ongoing.
Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah expressed his condolences, highlighting Bilagi’s dedication to public service. “He had rendered honest service as the Chief Executive Officer of Zilla Panchayats in several districts and as a District Collector. Mahantesh had left his mark of efficiency everywhere he carried out his duties,” Siddaramaiah stated. Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar echoed these sentiments, describing Bilagi as an “efficient officer, renowned for his public service initiatives,” and noted that his passing is an “irreplaceable loss to society.”
In a separate unrelated incident on the same day, a government bus overturned in Uttara Kannada district, injuring 20 passengers. Emergency services responded promptly, and the injured individuals were transported to Ankola Government Hospital, where two passengers are reported to be in critical condition.
The community mourns the loss of Mahantesh Bilagi, whose contributions to Karnataka’s administrative framework will be remembered. The state’s leaders have emphasized the importance of his work, and his legacy will continue to inspire future generations of public servants.
