Manipur Police Crack Down: Village Chief Arrested in Major Opium Bust
Manipur police have arrested a village chief on drug-related charges and dismantled a major poppy cultivation area in two operations in Kangpokpi district, officials confirmed on November 24.
A joint team apprehended 43-year-old Lunkhohao Kipgen, chief of Gunphaibung village under Saikul police station, during a raid in Bongmoul village on November 23. Authorities recovered 986 grams of opium and a mobile phone from his possession. This arrest is part of broader efforts to dismantle local narcotics distribution networks.
In a related operation on November 22, security forces collaborated with the Forest Department and the Narcotics Control Bureau to carry out a large-scale destruction initiative in the Kotlen village area under Kangpokpi police station. This operation cleared approximately 41 acres of poppy plants.
The teams also demolished 23 makeshift huts used for cultivation and seized various supplies, including nine bags of fertilizer, 11 packets of herbicide, four bags of salt, and assorted agricultural tools. Officials described these coordinated efforts as a significant blow to illegal opium production in the district.
