SLDB Unveils Bold Roadmap to Save Indigenous Siri Cattle
The Sikkim Livestock Development Board (SLDB) convened its 38th Board Meeting today at the Chief Executive Officer’s office in Deorali, Gangtok. Chaired by Dr. Sharman Rai, Secretary of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services, the meeting included senior officials and key stakeholders from the department, as reported in a press release.
Prominent attendees included principal directors Dr. Sandeep Gurung and Dr. K.T. Bhutia, along with directors Dr. Sanjay M. Gazmer, Dr. D.P. Pradhan, and Dr. A.L. Rai. Dr. Pratik Sharma, CEO and member secretary of the SLDB, delivered a welcome address and later presented the vote of thanks.
A significant focus of the meeting was an in-depth discussion about the conservation strategy for the indigenous Siri cattle, a breed that holds both cultural and practical importance for Sikkim. The board explored various support mechanisms aimed at enhancing the sustainability and productivity of Siri cattle farming throughout the state.
Additionally, the meeting resolved to create a comprehensive breeding policy and regulatory framework tailored specifically for the Siri belts in Sikkim. This initiative aims to ensure the scientific and long-term conservation of this unique breed.
Furthermore, the establishment of a genetic-level laboratory at SLDB received approval, marking a crucial step toward advancing genomic research and improving indigenous cattle breeds.
