Hatijan Tea Workers End 16-Day Strike After Unions’ Successful Talks
Dibrugarh, Nov 20: After a 16-day complete shutdown at Hatijan tea estate, workers have decided to end their strike and return to work, following significant intervention from the All Adivasi Students’ Association of Assam (AASAA), the Assam Tea Tribes Students’ Association (ATTSA), and local MLA Terash Gowala. This intervention was critical as the district administration struggled to mediate the prolonged standoff between the workers and management.
The breakthrough occurred during a general meeting organized by the Assam Chah Mazdoor Sangha (ACMS), attended by leaders from AASAA, ATTSA, and MLA Gowala on Wednesday. After thorough discussions, the workers agreed to resume operations starting November 20, 2025, recognizing that an extended shutdown would only deepen their economic difficulties and threaten the future of the estate.
With the resumption of work on the horizon, ABITA Zone I secretary Madhurjya Barooah expressed gratitude to MLA Gowala and the leaders of both AASAA and ATTSA for their vital role in resolving the impasse amicably. He emphasized that the workers were the most affected by the prolonged shutdown and underlined the importance of allowing legal processes to address grievances fairly.
Barooah also stressed that unity and responsibility from both workers and management are crucial for protecting the Hatijan tea estate and ensuring the livelihoods of hundreds of families depending on it. It is noteworthy that the 16-day shutdown has already caused significant agronomic damage to the estate, which is owned by Dhunseri Tea and Industries Ltd., and it is reportedly facing increasing pest threats.
