Nitish Kumar Sworn In as Bihar CM for Historic 10th Term After NDA Victory
Nitish Kumar was sworn in as the Chief Minister of Bihar for a record tenth time on Thursday, November 20, further solidifying his long-standing influence over the state’s politics. The president of the Janata Dal (United) was unanimously elected as the leader of both the JD(U) Legislature Party and the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) Legislature Party just a day prior, paving the way for the new government’s formation.
At a meeting held in Patna on Wednesday, newly elected JD(U) MLAs officially selected Kumar as their Legislature Party leader at his residence. Following this, the NDA allies collectively endorsed him as their chosen leader to head the alliance government. In a separate gathering at the BJP’s state headquarters, Samrat Choudhary and Vijay Kumar Sinha were appointed as leader and deputy leader of the BJP Legislature Party. Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya served as the central observer for this process and proposed both candidacies, which were unanimously supported by the present MLAs. This indicates that Choudhary and Sinha will likely continue in their roles as Deputy Chief Ministers from the previous administration.
The swearing-in ceremony attracted high-profile attendees, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, and BJP national president JP Nadda, along with several chief ministers from NDA-ruled states. Shah and Nadda arrived in Patna a day before the event to participate in the ceremony.
Kumar resigned as Chief Minister on Wednesday before claiming the right to form the new government. According to the understanding within the NDA, ministerial positions are expected to be allocated proportionately. Smaller alliance partners are anticipated to receive one cabinet position for every six MLAs they have. It is likely that one minister will come from the Rashtriya Lok Morcha, one from the Hindustani Awam Morcha (Secular), and three from Chirag Paswan’s Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas). Reports suggest that eight MLAs from both the BJP and JD(U) will take the oath today, alongside one MLA each from RLM, HAM(S), and the LJP (Ram Vilas).
